Divisional Secretariat - Maruthankerny

 

The districts of the Sri Lanka are divided into administrative sub-units, know as Divisional Secretarats. These were originally based on the feudal countries. the corales and ratas. They were formerly known as DRO Divisions. After the Divisional Revenue Officer, later the DRO's became 'Assistant Government Agents' and the divisions were known as a AGA divisions. Currently the divisons are administered by a Divisional Secretary and are known as 'Divisional Secretariat'.

Vadamaradchy East Divisional Secretariat has 18 Grama Niladhari divisions. It is one of 15 Divisional Secretariat in Jaffna District. It had been functioning as Assistant Government Agent's office from 1989 to 2012. Now it has been promoted as Divisional Secretariat. Total population of this division is 16428 from 5037 families. Fishing families of these division is 3292 and 13011 persons are in these families. this area has 52 kilometers of sea shore and 15 fishermen cooperative societies and one fishermen cooperative union functioning in this Division now. due to tsunami and war, people of this division were affected and displaced many times. after the war ended, from mid of 2009 people have been resettled.
